I can’t with the TVD fandom’s discussion around race and the witches. I actually can’t.
If I see one more comment trying to “explicate” the “mating” habits of “Africans”, “slaves”, or “black people in America” or whatever, I’ll poke someone’s eye out with a sharp stick. And it’s just…
I think the reason for this is because, in this society, white people and people of color have come to be conditioned to see majority white people on their television screens and mainstream entertainment. If a character is badass and cool- they must be white. Or at least there must be one white counterpart just like them. If that isn’t the case then it “rubs people the wrong way” for “some reason”. They’ve tried to condition people of color to be completely OK with not seeing people who look like themselves on mainstream entertainment b/c since this country has began European/western/white has been taught as the NORM. Because it is taught as the norm no one is prone to bat an eye, especially white people, when a show comes on tv that is a majority, if not all, Caucasian- even if it is in some place that is supposed to be diverse as FUCK like New York City (cough: Friends: cough). But let there be an all black show or a group of people that are all poc on a show that is not on BET and 10 times out of 10 someone will feel the absolute NEED to point out “hey, why are they all black” because due to the conditioning we’ve been taught when we don’t see white people involved it automatically screams not right to us or…different. So when most of the questions are along the lines of “why are all the witches black” what they really mean to say is “why are there no badass white witches”.
This may be controversial but I think this sentiment goes for both whites AND people of color. How many shows have come on that is all white set in a time and place that it doesn’t have to be the case and most of us still talk about giving the show our ratings? Why are we so ok with looking at other peoples stories and not pushing to get our own told?
I for one am very happy that all the witches thus far have been black. I think it could be very interesting if they dive into the reasons why that is the case. Perhaps the original witch family is of African descent and through their lineage other witch families came to be who are also of African descent. I get annoyed when people seem to be pushing for non-black witches as though there’s something wrong with the witches being black. I mean, why don’t we hear the same sentiment for the vampires? There’s only been like one black vampire on this show thus far- and I think he was someone’s servant. Yet no one says, “hey why are all the POWERFUL vampires white?” No, no- you won’t hear that b/c no one thinks that is out of the ordinary…
Ok- my long rant is over-lol.
I think the problem isn’t ‘Why are all the witches black?’ it’s why do they show up just to save the day and have nothing else to do and no other plotlines. They’re basically just plot points, not people.
