To those of you trying to figure out the kerfluffle…
Before we begin, let me make it very clear that I am not speaking for anyone or their experience. I am sharing my own, which includes things people have said to me. However, it is rhetorically helpful to generalize certain terms, so keep that in mind as you read.
A few weeks ago I posted a rant on my LJ called “The Absence of Squee” in which I lamented how insular and closed off the Teen Wolf fandom is, as created and perpetrated by the Sterek fans. This rant was copied to tumblr with my permission and received an incredible response. The problem is, that nearly all of that response was individual TW fans saying “I agree,” “I feel left out too,” “I didn’t know there was anyone else with the same viewpoint here.” The opening line of that rant was “Sometimes this fandom makes me sad.” For every response that came in, I felt both happiness to find another potential fan to squee with, and further sadness that so many people were suffering in silence. Fandom is not a place to suffer. It exists TO BE FUN.
One of the issues I complained about, and one that responders acknowledged, and one I see brought up over and over again on tumblr is the handling of Scott by the fandom. This is the onlyone I’m going to deal with now because it seems to be a crux.
For those of you rolling your eyes or getting annoyed or angry at seeing all this hashed out again, let’s play a game.
