teen wolf is misogynistic
to prove that, i made a graph
and then i got really sad
then angry
How is Teen Wolf misogynistic? Do girls scream? Yes, they do! Considering Lydia’s storyline last season, you know, being attacked by a werewolf, not knowing what it is. Hell yeah she’d scream. Just stop.
What about Derek and Scott? Constantly having their shirts off. How many times has Scott screamed? A few. All because it’s a girl, doesn’t mean they’re sexist. Women and Men do all of those things.
STOP SEXUALIZING AND STEREOTYPING LYDIA!
you do realize, teen wolf sexualizes lydia
and stereotypes her
stiles even sexualizes her crying. he tells her it’s attractive
a large percentage of lydia’s scenes are her screaming
a large percentage of scott’s scenes are him finding out how to deal with his problems and stop being afraid
yo hold up, since when was Lydia Martin EVER a thing to objectify?
It says it directly in the lines. “Lydia Martin is not only beautiful, not only incredibly intelligent… she’s immune.”
Lydia Martin is a mother-fucking fabulous, well-dressed, kick-ass, brilliant, sassy immune scientist/mathematician and never have I ever (except maybe in the very first episode when we knew nothing about her) before this whole debacle about someone that might not even be her have I seen a Teen Wolf fan consider Lydia an an object.
She’s literally the entire reason why they beat Peter in season 1, if not for her molotov cocktail recipe (that she would have saved the day with in Night School if it weren’t for dumbass Jackson) then everyone would be dead and people wouldn’t even have a show to complain about.
She was naked for what? A whole shower scene and 5 seconds in the woods?
You want to complain about her screaming? She JUST learned about all this supernatural shit going down in the very last episode of the latest season, and do you know how many times she screamed about werewolves or lizards in that episode after she had time to process and come to terms with what was going on? Zero.
She had completely zero idea about everything that was happening in the context of the show and her character had every god damn right to scream her head off about the weird shit that’s BEEN TRYING TO KILL HER.
thank you and good day
using the ‘beautiful intelligent immune’ quote as part of your argument is literally the dumbest thing ever because that quote essentially sums up how lydia’s become more a plot device than an actual character xoxo
also since i’m here: lydia martin spent half of the season screaming or showing other signs of obvious distress. and yes, she had reasons to be - no one’s arguing that she shouldn’t be screaming. we’re arguing that she’s been reduced to being that screaming girl in the horror movie. she doesn’t get any agency at all, she just gets kept in the dark and so all she’s got is to be afraid and to scream. and that’s infuriating because she deserves fucking better
she also deserves better than the fandom’s favourite quote about her being something said by her tormentor that puts an emphasis on her ~mysterious immunity~ (aka the thing that’s basically made her a plot device) over her beauty and intelligence, which are actual aspects of her character
reblogging for the best commentary ever ^^^
reminder: characters exist on two levels: textually, which is at the level of the piece of work. on this level, yes, lydia is the unfortunate victim of a lot of bad shit, including being attacked, manipulated, lied to, etc. in this sense, lydia handles the situation the best way she knows how as defined by her characteristics and her personality. on a textual level, her actions and her portrayal make a kind of sense—she screams and cries, she loves jackson and it is a large part of her life, and sometimes she is naked—and she has a right to do all of these things! and feel them! her situation is hard.
HOWEVER, ON A METATEXTUAL LEVEL (which is what swingset and pheobesexual are saying) LYDIA’S PORTRAYAL IS INCREDIBLY PROBLEMATIC AND HYPOCRITICAL, coming from a show runner who claims to portray equality to oppressed groups, and in a fandom which supposedly supports this idea. as stated, when we define Lydia by a line a male character (who has abused her both physically and mentally) says, she becomes voiceless. when Lydia (and Allison!) is kept in the dark by male characters, treated horribly by the boy who is supposed to be her ~true love~, put on a pedestal by stiles, ignored by her parents, and physically threatened and injured over and over, it serves to contribute to the larger pool of media which also sends this same message. it says that a woman’s agency is not as important as a man’s, it says women are frightened, that they need a man to save them.
when the show depicts lydia nude, it’s supposedly telling us that she is sexually confident, but when it’s twenty seconds of slow-panning up the side of her body while she showers, or in the form of stiles and a bunch of (male!) police officers gawking at her as she exits the woods naked, it sends the message that her body is a visual, sexual thing.
when the shows demonstrates that lydia is good at math and knows archaic latin, it’s supposedly telling us that she is smart and capable and strong. but then it goes and subverts that by keeping lydia in the dark, by making her so psychologically damaged and frightened that her intelligence is no longer an asset.
the show tells us that lydia is immune, but that immunity is used as a plot device for jackson’s storyline as the kanima and for peter’s ability to manipulate her from beyond the grave.
i could go on, but i’m tired, so basically: on a textual level, yes, lydia is an awesome person who is subject to unfortunate circumstances and that’s it. but creatively, jeff davis wrote her like that.it was deliberate to subject her to all of these things; versus, say, a male character—not that the male characters in this show don’t also suffer from pretty tough shit, but the point is that at least their shit gets some really, honest, thoughtful exploration, whereas lydia and allison’s storylines were very much for the purpose of aiding the major plotlines along, without the same attention paid to their agency.
[ETA: yeah jeff has talked about exploring lydia and allison in season 3, so i guess we’ll see, but damn if that promo doesn’t really piss me off.]

I GOT BORED. GONNA BE SUPER EMBARRASSING IF THIS IS INACCURATE SOMEHOW!
[If you want to get picky, Lydia, if assigned Scott’s problem, could actually pretty easily approximate the square root of 72 as 8.5 in her head, which would give her x-values of -3.125 and 1.125. She could get even closer depending on how close she is to actually having a calculator for a brain, but, well. THE PROBLEMS ARE NOT COMPARABLE.]

i just
really want to talk about that scene with lydia and stiles in his bedroom in the finale
and how stiles somehow manages to make everything about him
and i want to light things on fire
YESSS
I think the worst part of that scene (and there are so many *worsts*) is how MUCH fandom/the audience jumped on the “poor stiles and his pain” train. HELLO HAVE YOU SEEN WHAT LYDIA’S BEEN THROUGH??
And after she storms out, we’re never shown the scene where he runs after and apologizes and says “I’ll drive you”. Because he must have! (i hope there was an apology in there) since we next see them together, charging in to save the day.
I really really wanted that scene.
It’s like for all that Stiles thinks that since he knows so much about her that he’s the one that deserves her affections, yet she doesn’t even deserve an apology after being yelled at for wanting to save Jackson instead of waiting on the sidelines? Not respectful.
Stiles was face to face with “lydia the ideal” (girl i’ve had a crush on for a long time! in my bedroom!) and “lydia the person” (….wants to save another guy.) and instead of having THAT realization be the focus of the scene, the writers went with “Stiles is still in denial, lydia’s problems are all about him! because he *cares* about her! LOOK AT HIS FEELINGS!”
If we could get 2 minutes of Peter wincing as he watched a fight scene (so lame and superfluous!) we could definitely have had Stiles show some character growth and be seen ACTUALLY apologizing to Lydia the person?
(but no, his acceptance of lydia-is-not-mine seems to come only when he sees her as the *magical soul mate of another guy*, and even then not at all.)
fuck stiles getting ‘character growth’, the scene should have been about lydia and stiles can go idk fall in a hole or something
that’s kind of the point: the scene was about him and it shouldn’t have been at all. it should have been about lydia and her pain and her trauma bc newsflash she’s got a fuckton of it

That kiss in the coach’s office wasn’t Scott/Lydia’s first kiss?
What if they’ve been secretly fucking in dark classrooms? What if Scott’s spent afternoons after school under Lydia as she tugs on his hair? What if Lydia’s been stifling her moans against the column of his throat as his body rubs against hers, his hand already tugging up her shirt?
And they’ve both never told anyone. Lydia because why would she want the school to know that she’s gone hoarse from screaming the nerd’s name? Scott because he knows how fucked up it is to be sleeping with your best friend’s childhood crush. How is he supposed to explain to Stiles that every time he says something about Lydia, Scott promises himself that he’ll never go near her again but when she’s there, all nails and tongue and skin he can’t think of anything else except LydiaLydiaLydia
Until she breaks it off- Jackson’s been getting suspicious. For a while Scott is upset, but he’s seen it coming. But then he’s suddenly captain of the lacrosse team, and he has a girlfriend ( ‘I never knew you had a thing for brunettes’ she’ll pant at him one day )and he’s got this vibe about him, it makes Lydia curious again- its like a moth to a flame, not that she would ever admit it.
And then there they are, making out in the coach’s office like old times. Except it’s really not. It’s different- Scott is different. She may like it

Smile, Allison. for Kathryn

their entire relationship was rewritten. this special bond they shared, was never depicted on screen before.
what we saw before was a relationship that was convenient. neither of them seemed to think too highly of each other. lydia hid her intelligence from jackson, and was largely concerned with his status as a star athlete and captain. jackson had little regard for lydia’s feelings when he broke off their relationship (he was downright cold about it), and when he accused lydia of passing on her immunity to him? he accosted her in public and left her in tears.
where the hell was this special bond then?
… that being said, i do not hate this retcon. adding a little heart to toxic relationships makes things interesting. but can we get some goddamned consistency next season?
Teen Wolf drinking game- every time Allison’s being ridiculously cheesy in love with Scott or completely off her rocker, take a shot.
teen wolf drinking game - every time fandom is sexist, abliest, or racist take a shot. finish your drink if all three.
Oh my god darling, get back out of the tag. SAVE YOURSELF.
Btw OP, you suck.

I just want to know why the hell Lydia would even go to Stiles. Like, on the list of people she would go to, Stiles seems like somewhere she’d go way past the rest of our main cast.

I definitely expected more and I’m hoping this doesn’t go the way of Heroes I can’t take that again.

yeah.I think my expectations were too high — my idea of a good second season is more character development, not more plot. I thought new characters would awesome, and shake up the previous dynamics, but instead they were just forgotten? sloppy :/I just feel like a lot of stuff didn’t go anywhere or was super random or was drawn out for no reason at all.
Jackson is a kanima and is being controlled the whole time by Matt (who may or may not have actually died) but needs a friend and we find his anchor is Lydia. SERIOUSLY THAT’S IT? IT TOOK THAT LONG?Ten episodes of Lydia being controlled to bring back Peter who is still irrelevant to me. Lydia’s my girl but the best thing she’s gotten out of this season is pretty shots for graphic makers. If Stiles could’ve actually been apart of a relevant plot I wouldn’t resent him as much as I do. It was all really good while happening and now it feels bleh. There’s a lot of sloppy stuff that will haunt me forever and I don’t like it.
This is so true. Honestly, she might as well have missed the entire season for the amount of times she got to be herself. Technically, she’s still the same as she was in season 1, because all this crap is happening to her, and she’s absent. She walks around, screams, is out of it, but has she changed? Or regressed? She’s just stuck.
I can’t deal with how pointless her storyline has been to anyone who is not a cisdude character. And it hasn’t even been presented sympathetically. She has gotten no special care or attention from any of them and realize they are going through a lot but we’ll get a few days in between drama happening, surely one of them could stop by with flowers, well wishes, and time. Her disconnect from the main group has been really disappointing to me.
