February 25, 1941: Birthday of Emmett Till
On this day in 1941 Emmett Till was born. He was murdered in Mississippi in 1955 at the age of 14 after reportedly flirting with a white woman. Emmett Till would have been 73 years old today.

The shade of it all
but its true though….
i know there’s a lot of debate on whether kim k can be considered a woc but between me and you this really struck some serious racist undertones for me. idk if i’m projecting or what but ….nah.
okay but real quick tho you guys know why people cry at movies and tv shows? even though the characters are fictional and they’re not even actual people that we know? it’s called empathy. it forms in the same place that attachment and love centers in the brain. so when we see fictional characters crying, or hurt, or shamed, or experiencing any overwhelmingly visible emotion we react in similar ways even though it’s not actually happening to us.
something really interesting happens though when it comes to having empathy for black people (especially black women) for some reason (likely years of societal conditioning). our ability to empathize with the people that look and are most like us slowly deteriorates. we’re exposed to so many images of black women in extreme situations of abuse (girlfighting videos) and distress that we become desensitized. it actually becomes enjoyable. we emulate the tendency for white people (who empathize easily with other white people) and black men (who empathize easily with other black men) to not see black women (who we should easily empathize with) as actual people. suddenly, the actual people are the fictional characters. whose distress and pain and discomfort and displays of overwhelming emotion are not only entertaining, but actually encouraged. we form narratives in our brains that build up enough story around a situation so we can feel justified in our cruelty. you guys did it up there when you blamed her humiliation on the fact that her wig was cheap. or it was somehow her fault for not having a sew-in. something as stupid as quality of hair is a good enough reason in society’s mind to bring a black woman to tears of embarrassment and shame.
i know, i know, it’s not that serious or deep. but here’s where it gets real. all of this inability to empathize with black women hurts all of us. because when we go missing, or we get raped, or we’re killed, no one cares. no one sees our pain or distress or hurt as real. they don’t look for us, they don’t lead marches and rallies in our honor, they don’t cover it on news media, there are no campaigns to stop senseless violence on inner city streets to save black girls. when we die at the hands of violent and abusive spouses, instead of police officers thinking our wigs are cheap, they assume that we brought it on ourselves by being “mouthy” and “sassy”. when our kids are kidnapped and go missing, instead of looking for them, authorities assume that there’s no way a black mother could be nurturing and caring and cannot empathize with our losses so they don’t get looked for. when we’re gang raped, there are no national media coverage of trials like in stubenville. the world doesn’t stop. because we somehow brought it on ourselves by being “fast” and loose” and “not keeping our legs closed” and “acting like a ho”.
so yeah, it is that serious. and yeah i just wrote y’all an essay in the hopes that you read it and think twice whenever you feel the urge to rejoice in a black girl’s pain or humiliation. or spontaneously think up a way for her to deserve that treatment to be justified in your hatred. and look around and see yourself laughing along with black men and white people and ask yourself why.
So when Justin Bieber talks about how abortion is evil and pregnancy from rape happens for a reason, people say, “he’s only 16, he doesn’t know any better!” And when Liam Payne defends the ‘family values’ of a virulently racist, homophobic family, then we get, “he’s only 20, guys! He can’t possibly know everything yet!” So let me ask you, at what point will all these privileged white guys actually be expected to take responsibility for their actions?

This is Rafael Rayo, 24, of El Monte currently a senior at Cal Poly State University of Pomona as a Computer Science student.
This is the guy who has been frustrating me with his sexist, racist remarks.
During a quarter at Cal Poly Pomona in 2013, we had a study group for our Computer Science class as our finals were coming up. During the study group he made some comments that stick to my mind even after half a year.
- "You know how I can tell you’re asian? No tits!"
- When I was trying to teach an aspect of the class he said, “No. No. NO. Shut up.” and after I told him I was not going to and I continued speaking he said, “I like it when women don’t talk.”
Then, today, 1/9/14 during our class when trying to show another female student how to restart the computer to so as to get onto another system he said,
- "You gotta force it in, treat it like a woman. Slap it around to get it to do what you want."
After some more comments made, the other girl said she was going to go, or he had to leave because his remarks were rude and making him uncomfortable. He laughed. I’m not proud of saying it, but I told him he needed to knock it off or I was going to hit him. Violence is NEVER an answer, but in my seething, shaking rage I couldn’t hold back my voice. Though I did NOT hit him as he said, “Go ahead. You know the consequences.” And he laughed. Again. Basically saying that there was nothing I could do because hitting him to shut him up would get me in trouble when he’s the one guilty of verbal harassment. So he could continue to say whatever he wanted.
Well, there isn’t much I can do. If this persists, I will be taking it to the Dean of our college. But for the time being, I would at least like to share this experience and his face and name with the world. Though I cannot speak for everyone, he makes it uncomfortable to be in a class that is for my major (which is already male dominated) and makes the learning environment feel unsafe.
Reblog the fucktard that’s harassing my friend. So. Not. Cool.
I had an almost similar experience during a class. I’m glad everyone else hated him too and insulated me in group draft-reading sections.
is famous for her backflip landed on only one blade; she is considered the only skater in the world capable of this move
Why am I just now hearing about her??????
Because you’re young. She retired from amateur competition after the ‘98 Nagano Olympics and never medalled at the Olympics in her career, but she did win gold at Europeans a bunch of times and silvered at Worlds a few times.
The main thing to understand about Surya Bonaly’s career as a skater is that figure skating is racist as fuck and she never fit the image of a skater, to judges or to commentators. Race and colorism were a huge fucking factor in how she was evaluated and discussed—she’s French, born in Nice, but her (white) adoptive parents lied and said she was born off Madagascar and abandoned by her birth parents to make her seem more ~exotic~, to give you an idea.
Commentators were especially horrid to her and loved to praise her for her “athletic” style but would always criticize her for not being ~artistic~ enough and she always got dinged on artistic presentation. She would always do well in the short program on technical marks and then the long program would be her achilles heel because of how heavily artistic presentation was weighted. (For the younger among you, this is pre-SLC so this is when the old judging system was still being used.)
More proof of how fucked skating is: Surya is also the only woman to my knowledge to ever land a quad toe loop in competition or even attempt one and to this day they don’t want to credit her with actually landing it, because all four rotations were not completed in air. Granted, there is a fair case to be made that it was only a triple, but don’t doubt that race played a role in that. They hated on this woman from the minute she got on the ice.
And yes, she landed that famous backflip on one blade at the 98 Olympics in her long program as one last FU to the system that had been fucking her for her whole career. Which is the real reason you should know who she is, tbh. Never was there a badder bitch on ice.
omfg my childhood
I remember her. And I remember that fucking flip.
She was fucking BADASS
Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man #28
If you’re not familiar with Ultimate Marve, that’s Miles Morales as Spider-Man instead of Peter Parker. This is him without the costume:
Kinda puts that interaction in a different light.
the struggle of being a woman of color in the media
LISTEN THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE THE ARTICLE IS ABOUT WOMEN IN TV AND THESE FUCKERS MADE MINDY KALING’S COVER BLACK AND WHITE THEY WHITEWASHED A BROWN GIRL IM SO TICKED
Junius Stinney was the youngest person in America to be executed on death row in 1944 at age 14. He was quickly accused by the (white police) of ‘killing’ two little (white girls) with lack of evidence. His conviction and sentencing opened and closed in one day. There were no witnesses called and there was no transcript of the trial details and black people were not allowed inside the courtroom during that time.
[I always repost this because i don’t want anyone to forget about him!]
